It has been eight years since MSC first thought about building a football stadium, three years since MSC first joined the NCAA, and three years playing football in a "god awful," field said MSC's football Coach, Terry Dow.
Even though there has been continuous effort by the grounds crew, MSC's football field is "often dangerous and or unplayable," said Dow who has coached MSC's football team for 12 years.
Now MSC is finally able to build their dream stadium. The school has received a state-funded; $5 million strategic initiative construction grant. Greg Carroll, MSC's Director said President Cross was a leader in the project and, "worked extremely hard at SUNY level to secure these funds."
Currently it is estimated that the stadium will cost more than the $5 million, but Carroll said, "we are hoping the bidding climate will allow the construction bids to come in lower than the project cost."
An architecture company from Ithaca, HMH Site and Sports Design, was chosen by Morrisville out of about 30 applicants to build the stadium. Carroll said HMH is "outstanding" and their track record is excellent."
Carroll said a problem with MSC's current field is working with the upstate New York weather. As a result, the new stadium will have synthetic turf, which is state of-the-art material for college football stadiums.
Depending on how far the $5 million can go, Carroll said the stadium will be "very attractive with bleachers, press box and locker rooms built into the side of the hill."
Carroll said he is hoping the $5 million will stretch far enough for the construction of a hospitality room on top of the press box. The room would be "used for various functions connected to events being held on the field," he said. However, because there is only $5 million he is reluctant about the hospitability room because of the greater cost.
"The hospitability room would be the part of the project that makes it more than just a stadium," Carroll said. There would be an all glass front, which Carroll called "very striking."
