The Mustangs played over 90 minutes of aggressive play against the Eagles without managing to net a second game-winning goal.
The Mustangs went hard into the first half, scoring their first and only goal from a penalty kick. Andrew Stein, a sophomore midfielder from Oswego, NY, put the ball to the back of the net in the 34th minute of play.
Not long after Stein's goal, younger brother Eric Stein, a third-year defender, received the second yellow card of the game, the first given to number four, Kris Szentendrei from Green Mountain. "It's frustrating knowing the fact that everybody played so hard but we missed some shots we should have made," said Eric. "We could have won the game."
Shutting out the Eagles for the first 45 minutes of play, the Mustangs ended the first half with a 1-0 lead over Green Mountain College.
Starting the second half, the Eagles made few attempts before finally sinking their first goal in the 56th minute of play. Tim Atwood, assisted by Chris Gaskin, kicked the only point for Green Mountain, tying the game into overtime.
After two ten-minute overtimes, the Eagles and Mustangs ended the game with a 1-1 tie, making both teams' records 0-0-1.
"Even though we did get two extra ten minute chances to score and didn't, we earned that win," said Chris Dickey, a junior midfielder. "We played hard and we earned it."
Former Mustang midfielder Allan Schroeder said, "I think the men are looking at a good upcoming season. Even though they didn't get the win, they still have a lot of skill on that field." Although Schroeder doesn't have an extra year of eligibility left, he still is an active member of the soccer team, helping at practices and games.
The team will travel to D'Youville College for a two-day tournament on Sept. 5 and 6, and play at home on Sept. 9 against Hilbert College at 4 p.m.
