The women's soccer team returns from a winless season, scoring only 5 goals of 32 attempts in their 2008 season.

"They have done some great recruiting during the offseason to fortify their group as well as to replace lost members," Tim Harris, parent of a Cazenovia College athlete, said.

The Mustangs opened their 2009-2010 season with a 6-0 loss to Russell Sage College. "We all have hard times making transitions in life, but where there is a will, there is a way." Maria Potreall, a fan of the Mustangs said.

The women's soccer team beat Southern Vermont College on Sept.9 for their first win since 2006.

"The transition isn't as easy as everyone thinks. People always make comments about how we're doing, but to actually step out on the field and play our hearts out! They have no clue what that is like," Potreall said.

The Mustangs' Chris Perkins enters his third season as head coach. "We played a good game; we had several scoring opportunities, a few times the ball came off the sidebar and a few missed penalty shots," Perkins said. "We just have to keep playing hard."

The Mustangs hosted SUNY Maritime for their first home game of the 2009 season. They suffered another loss to the Privateers 5-0. The Privateers scored two goals late in the game to seal their victory and advance to a record of 3-0 while the Mustangs fell to 0-2.

"This year's team differs from last year's for the simple fact that we are much more dedicated. Although we've only played two games so far, I can see the potential in our team," junior forward Awliya Abdu-Shahid said. "The key to success for this season is focus, to take what we're doing seriously and to have fun while doing it."

As of Sept. 23, the team's overall record is 1-5. The team will play their next game at Albany College of Pharmacy Oct. 1 at 1 p.m.

They will play their next home game on Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. against Wilson College.
