The women's field hockey team lost to the RPI Engineers Saturday, Oct. 17, 5-1.
"The team has fought hard throughout the season and has made a lot of progress," said junior atacker Lauren Bordonaro.
Nineteen minutes into the game, the Engineers netted their first goal from Jessica Corrigan with an assist from Hannah Kaplan, putting the Mustangs down by one in the first half. Nearly seven minutes later Sandy Turnbull tallied a second goal for RPI, assisted by Shaina Feldman.
With less than five minutes left in the first half, RPI's Molly Johnston put the Mustangs down by three with an assist from teammate Megan McNamara. The Mustangs went into halftime down by three with three saves from keeper Kelsey Pellegrino.
In the second half, senior Stephanie Smith started in the goal for the Mustangs, giving Pellegrino a rest after a 10-shot first half. Ten minutes in, Turnbull netted another for the Engineers, this time from Alissa Peterson, giving RPI their fourth goal of the game.
"We played well, as a team, just couldn't put the ball in the back of their net," Bordonaro said. "We're still a developing team; a very young one for that matter. We are always looking to move forward with our games. We are looking to end our season 7-12, to be over 500 in our season."
In the 57th minute of play, Julie Campbell put one past Smith from a penalty corner, assisted by Joanna Aliprando. With the fight for a comeback late in the game, Lauren Bordonaro put the Mustangs on the scoreboard with an assist from Brandy Tebo. The Mustangs ended the game lacking four goals.
"The girls have worked extremely hard in practice and I'm proud of where we are, whether it shows in our record or not," head coach Adair Milmoe said.
The team is on a five game losing streak with losses to SUNY Oswego on Oct. 10, Skidmore College on Oct. 16, and the latest, RPI on Oct. 17.
The Mustangs currently stand at 5-12 (1-5 SUNYAC) with two games remaining. They return to the field for their final home game Saturday, Oct. 24, against Wilson College at 2 p.m. The Mustangs' last game of the season will be played at Hamilton College at 1 p.m.
