Brothers and Sisters in Christ, a campus club, will be collecting Christmas gifts for less-fortunate children in third-world countries until Nov. 18. Last year, Operation Christmas sent eight million children shoeboxes full of gifts. This year, BASIC is trying to exceed this amount.
Individuals on campus, the Morrisville community and Resurrection Life Fellowship church in Eaton have contributed to the cause. Club president David Camp said everyone is very supportive. Camp said he has seen first-hand those living in boxes, with no hope. "What we are doing shows them that we and other people haven't forgotten about them," he said.
Advisor Christine Krause said it's a good feeling to bring joy to those in need. She said they are unable to accept war-related toys, chocolate or liquids. The club will be collecting smaller toys, toothbrushes, socks and other items that will fit in a shoebox.
BASIC is a Christian group that was created in 2003 by Harold Coleman. The club holds prayer sessions, weekly bible studies and other events around campus. Coleman said this program gives him fulfillment.
Krause said the greatest benefit is seeing people give a little. The club holds their meeting every Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Crawford Hall. The group is open to new members and anyone is welcome.
