For many high school girls around the country, prom and other formal dances are the highlights of their school year. These dances offer girls the chance to live out their fairy tale dreams for a night, while building memories that will last a lifetime. However, not every family can afford to give their daughter the dress of their dreams, which makes formal dress charities such as Cinderella's Closet not only a nice idea but a necessity. Without them, many high school girls would miss out on the joy and experiences of prom.
The Central New York local chapter of Cinderella's Closet is working closely with students from local high schools, Morrisville State College, Cazenovia College and Colgate University to bring formal gowns and accessories to underprivileged girls in the area. The purpose of Cinderella's Closet is stated clearly in the organization's mission statement of providing every young woman with the opportunity to "feel like a princess" regardless of financial status, by collecting and offering free prom dresses to any young woman in need. Their volunteers are campaigning at the local colleges and in the adjacent towns to spread the word of the cause. Local businesses are being contacted to help with different aspects of the project. There have been drop-off locations established at Morrisville State College, Cazenovia College, Colgate University, Oneida High School, Hamilton Public Library and Hamilton Middle School. This new organization is still working on a Web site that will include pictures of the gowns and information about donating dresses or money to the project.
Any local girl in need of a formal dress is welcome to come and find the one that makes her feel like a princess. With scheduled try-on dates, the girls can come in and try-on different dresses in their size until they find the dress of their dreams. The first try-on will take place at Hamilton Bible Fellowship Church, 7433 Hamilton St., Hamilton. The try-on will be held on Nov. 14, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be notices sent out to inform the public when more try-on dates are scheduled.
Charities like Cinderella's Closet thrive on individual and community donation and support. The more dresses, supplies and money donated, the more girls can be helped. If you would like to donate a dress, accessories or make a monetary contribution to Cinderella's Closet please contact Susan Nolen at snolen@colgate.edu or 315-824-3295.
