On April 3, Jiverly Wong entered the American Civil Association in Binghamton, NY, a mere 67 miles from campus. According to ABC News, Wong killed 13 people inside before taking his own life. These incidents happen every day across the country on a smaller scale, but nothing is done to ensure it doesn't happen again. Is it that the problem is irresolvable? Maybe it's the radical attitude changes in people over the last decade. It may be time to look into gun control and what it takes to get a permit, perhaps mental evaluations should be considered, as well as background checks.
When my friends and I learned about the attack on our friend, we could have hunted the attacker down and taken action. Instead, the law took control of the situation and the attacker is now serving a sentence for assault and battery. Who knows what could have happened if we retaliated? All I know is that it wasn't in our hearts to get involved, no matter how much we wanted to. According to ABC News, mass shootings claimed 53 lives in the past month, and as these numbers continue to climb, it should be recognized as a critical issue in the United States.
