The men's soccer team ended their 2009 season Nov. 3, at the NEAC Soccer Championship Tournament, losing to seventh-seeded Wells College 1-0 in double-overtime. The Mustangs ended the season with an overall record of 3-14-1.

Head coach Tom Daviau said he plans on getting the guys in shape before the season starts so they can compete with fewer chances of injuries. "We were competitive in every game, but we got unlucky and had some injuries." he said.

The Mustangs started the season with a 1-1 tie to Green Mountain College, followed by a 6-0 loss to Old Westbury. After winning three straight games in early Sept., beating D'Youville College, Hilbert College and SUNY Potsdam, the Mustangs settled on a 13-game losing streak with tough, one-goal loses to Penn State-Berks, SUNY Oswego, Wells College, Penn State-Abington, SUNY Canton and Penn State-Harrisburg.

Sophomore Eric Williamsen said he thinks the season ended worse than he expected. "We expected to be competitive, which we were, we just didn't win the games we thought we should have."

The Mustangs lost to Penn State-Harrisburg on Oct. 31, ending the game in overtime with a final score of 4-3. The Mustangs' three goals were scored by Sanley Pierre-Louis, who scored two, and Scott Morris, who added one.

The officials were often challenging, Williamsen said, but that was not the reason for any loss. "We can't blame it on the refs. No matter what they call, we have to keep playing. We can't let them get to our heads."

On Nov. 3, the Mustangs lost their final game of the season to Wells College, losing to the Express by one goal. The Mustangs tallied 23 shots during the match against Wells, seven on goal.

"The center official made a very questionable call [during the Wells game] which was ultimately the result of the game-winning goal for Wells," said Allan Schroeder, former Mustang soccer player.

"Overall," Schroeder added, "the men had a very unexpected and unjustified season. Based on the team's skill level, chemistry, and coaching tactics, the men easily could and should have been one of the top five contenders of the conference."

Daviau said he hoped to eliminate the number of yellow and red cards his players got this year by being more sportsmen like for the 2010 season.
