"It's been a bit of a rollercoaster with wins and tough games, close games against national ranked teams," head coach Brian Grady said of the Mustangs hockey teams' record this season.
The Mustangs are currently 3-9 in the SUNYAC conference and 6-14 overall this season. Over winter break, the team traveled to Saint Michael's College in Burlington, Vermont. They beat the host team on the first night of the tournament. "Everyone contributed," Grady said "we had five different players score." But the following night the team didn't even show up to play, Grady said. The Mustangs also beat defending National Champions Neumann College, "It was good for our program and confidence," defensemen Tom Longland said.
The Mustangs added two new players to their roster, a transfer from Utica College, Nick Kulas; and a transfer from Neumann College, John Cristini. Grady said, both have added something to the team. During his first game with the Mustangs, Kulas had a goal and an assist, while Cristini is a hardworking player, Grady added.
The first weekend students returned to campus, the Mustangs played Manhattanville College who is ranked in the top ten teams in the nation. "They are playing their best hockey of the season, it's just not showing," Grady said. "We out played them all game, we just couldn't capitalize," forward Matt Salmon said. Longland said the Mustangs have been working hard.
The past two and next four games are all conference play. Jan. 29 and 30, the Mustangs played SUNY Brockport and SUNY Geneseo and lost both nights. On Feb. 5 and 6, the team travelled to SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Plattsburgh; beating Potsdam 5-4 and losing to Plattsburgh 4-1.
The team has a chance to make the postseason if they beat SUNY Cortland this Friday night. The Mustangs next two games are home on Feb. 12, against SUNY Cortland, and Feb. 13, against #1 ranked SUNY Oswego.
The Mustangs will be opening the final home game, against Oswego, by honoring the five senior members of the team: Andrew Alarie, Dana Calderone, Joakim Cedin, Kyle Roberts, and Stefan Carnegie.
