The student government organization is looking for students to fill the openings for the executive board.
SGO has announced opening positions on the board for the next semester. The president, vice president and director of budget positions will be available for students to fill.
The SGO meetings held in Crawford Hall every Monday are open to clubs and organizations on campus that want a part in student government affairs. The executive board handles most of the organizing and financial issues of the student body and all of its activities.
The president position has many responsibilities. The president maintains order at all SGO meetings, and presides over the executive and assembly meetings. The president starts the pledge of allegiance at the beginning of every SGO meeting and also issues memos or letters to faculty, students and staff. According to the SGO Constitution, the president counsels the SGO officers and members in matters of parliamentary procedures. The president also calls special meetings when they need to and they advise the board on their performance in their jobs.
Kimani Smith is the current president of SGO. "A good president knows how to communicate well with others and work with a team," Smith says, "I'm looking forward to seeing how the election will turnout."
The vice president takes the place of the president when the president is unable to attend meetings. Some of the responsibilities of the vice president include approving all club constitutions and making sure they are up to date. Vice presidents also have to keep an updated file of each club and make sure the clubs are following the rules. The vice president has to keep attendance of the clubs at assigned meetings and notify the clubs of the constitutional reviews.
The director of budgets works with the SGO bookkeeper helping to maintain a record of financial transactions for SGO and the funded clubs. The director co-signs purchase requests and purchase orders and also authorizes checks. The director presents bills to the assembly every week along with weekly savings and checking balances. They chair the finance committee and budget hearings and conduct fall and spring inventory checks of all SGO equipment.
