The Faculty-Student Committee on Student Affairs will be looking for nominations for the annual Rays of Light scholarship. Nominations will be accepted starting Friday, Feb. 26. Both faculty and students are welcome to submit nominations until March 19.

Two awards will be given out at a ceremony on May 6. The Rays of Light Servant Leadership Award, an award sponsored in part by William and Sabra Reichert of the Barney II Foundation, will be awarded to a standing junior with a 2.5 GPA or higher. The recipient will be given $700 with $200 of it going to a charity of his or her choice. After being nominated, nominees will be required to submit a 500 word essay.

Assistant Professor of Business Administration and head of Student Affairs Tom Pilewski said the essay should include the nominee's volunteer experiences, as well as his or her philosophies and beliefs toward community service. He said nominees should include what they have learned from their volunteer experience.

The second award, the Rays of Light Award, is given to a standing sophomore with a 2.0 GPA or higher. He or she is awarded a $100 gift certificate to the book store. There is no essay requirement for this award. Both scholarships have been designed to recognize students who show outstanding leadership qualities and community involvement.

Pilewski said committee members used to sit at various tables around campus and nomination forms would be dropped off, but this year the committee has decided to take a slightly different approach. The nomination form can be found here. Once completed, it can be submitted online, emailed to Pilewski at Pilewsta@Morrisville.edu, or dropped off at the Student Activities office in the bottom of STUAC.

Last year, Ashley Zehr was awarded the Servant Leadership, sand Brandie Hazzard the Rays of Light award. Students and faculty are encouraged to begin thinking of those who they feel will best fit the award. "The strength of their nomination, plus their essay is what will get them the award," Pilewski said.
