The University Police are scheduled to move into Brooks Hall on June 1. Currently, Chief of Police Enrico D'Alessandro's office is the same as MSC's first president. D'Alessandro says, "It's time to move across the street."

Since D'Alessandro's arrival at MSC in 2001, he has been working on developing a more professional police setting. In Brooks Hall, there will be a conference room, locker rooms, storage room, interview rooms, a booking room, a secretary area, an office for the department's lieutenants and an investigation room.

The department will not have their own floor, but will be sharing with the Community Programs and Workforce Development.

D'Alessandro says the department's move will provide, "a little bit more security and privacy for those victims that have to come in and file a complaint." In Bailey Hall, when a person walks into the department's office, they are likely to be speaking with either officers or the secretary. D'Alessandro's office is within ear shot of this space.

One of the benefits of the move is there will be a lot more privacy. If an officer has to do an interview in private, it is held in Bailey's upstairs conference room, which is surrounded by classrooms. D'Alessandro says, "That's not fair to the victim," because there's no privacy.

The transition for the department is happening now because of what D'Alessandro called a "capital project," which is taking place in Bailey Hall. He says money is requested and put aside for a "larger plan for the entire campus." D'Alessandro says the project will provide, "more space dedicated to the educational process."

In Brooks, there are not going to be any major renovations, but rather a few changes. D'Alessandro says, "The cost is going to be minimal," because they are going to work with what they have. Changes will include some electrical work, painting and additional walls, but nothing extravagant.

Cheryl Hastings has been the department's secretary for two-and- a- half years. Currently, Hastings has no choice but to share her desk with officers and student dispatchers. Hastings says she is looking forward to, "having my own space and not having to share my space." D'Alessandro acknowledged that the usage of Hastings' desk can be frustrating when she arrives in the mornings and the desk is messy. Even though she's excited about the move, Hastings says, she will miss talking with other employees that work in Bailey.

Joan Clark, a Morrisville Auxiliary Corporation employee of fourteen years, currently parks her car in Brooks' parking lot and walks over to Bailey because there are never free or close parking spaces. Clark says the move is, "cool" because it will be easier to park.

Happy with the move, D'Alessandro says he will take what he can get, because the department "strives to be able to provide better service to the students, faculty and staff of this college."
